I know this is a fishing site but deer season is right around the corner...

Chasing Trophy Whitetails

“Closer than you think”

Part 1 of 3

So often I hear the same old story coming from friends, family and general inquiries from the Web or traffic from the show. It goes something like this: “Boys and I are packing up this evening. We’re heading to southern Illinois for a three-day hunt,” or “We’re driving five hours to Switzerland County,” allegedly the best county to hunt in Indiana. I always chuckle at hearing this because more often than not I catch up with them the following week to hear yet another familiar story. “Well, I saw a big buck but just didn’t get a shot,” or “A huge buck came in behind me and I got busted.”

It never ceases to amaze me how hard people work and how far they are willing to travel to bag that big buck for the season, so many times spending countless hours on the road and racking up huge travel expenses. Why, by the end of the season if they calculated all the costs and time involved, they could have paid a high-end outfitter somewhere and gotten the hunt of a lifetime for the same price and less wasted time.
